This page was directed to the people who would like to become volunteers in Akademia Przygody through the Programme of European Voluntary Service. However, the project co-financed by the European Union came to an end, still welcome volunteers who want to help us in our ideas, and at the same time to gain experience, and experience a great adventure!

Project environment
A. Project environment

We live among a beautiful mountains which encircle the Hollow of Kłodzko. In centre of it, there is situated the capital city of this vivid land, Kłodzko. Here, over a various buildings from different ages, it overtop the Fortress of Klodzko. And it is just one of many places – magical, full of stories and commemorations of the heroes. At last, Land of Klodzko has got the biggest mountain’s fortress in Europe situated in Srebrna Gora, mysterious „stone’s city” in Stolowe Mountains, heavy peak of Snieznik (1425 m), and moreover a lot of touristic towns, health resorts, famous from mineral watars. It gives to this region a chance to develop a tourism with active and unconventional way of spending a time. Simultaneously, because of enclosure by mountains from the rest of country in this region it can be observe some kind of provincialism what make him cultural-specific. Unfortunately, there is still some problems as with unemployed, emigration and government inactivity/absurdal activity (what could be an adventage for Monty Python’s lovers).

There is not so far from here to bigger cities. Wroclaw, capital city of region, is far about 80 km (2 hours by train, 1,5h by car), another, Walbrzych – not more than 50 km. But normally, there is not necessary to leave our city to do something interesting. Apart from our activities, we encurage you to participate in for instance to Yoga classes, Theartre groups, Martial Arts trainings etc.

Because of our Association’s philosophy and working methods, volunteer has to adapt to our principles – on the voluntary time at least. They are all base on universal rules – honesty and good example for our young wards. It’s unnecessary to say, that nobody are entitle to smoke, drink alcohol etc. in our area at least because of youths presence.

B. Proposed activites for volunteers

We have several of activities for volunteers depending of their preferences and abilities. In fact you will probably participate in each of these options, although, with different proportions. Here, in our Bastion there is always something to do. There is a lot of possibilities for individual quests on each of field. In general, you can take part in follow activities:

→ Renovation of Crane Prominent Bastion in Fortress of Kłodzko – to help in revitalization of this fortification and to build a base for youth. Volunteers as well as youths, take part in preparing place where they will be able to practice the indoor activities, where they can be free from surrounding’s problems, do something creative and interesting. The renovation works is a part of education methods of the Association thus volunteers are concerned about realizing social aims with youth during the physical work.

→ Education and training – assistance in preparing and execution a permanent activities for youth. This meetings (mostly twice a week plus special trips, trainings) contain all of our education methods – active way to spending their free time, objectives which need from participants creativity, ingenuity, pushing their own limits. Volunteer will not be responsible for taking care of youth. It is the task of the Instructors and Youth Leaders, however could be a person who is interesting of educate youth as well as himself.

→ Creative group – finding and realizing new concepts and ideas how to work with youth. Prepapring activity programs. Participating in plaining and organizing workshops, expeditions and meetings. Devising and creating historical costumes and equipment.

→ Public Relations – developing a web page of Akademia Przygody: improve layout, doing updates in English (or other) language. Making a virtual guide about travelled mountain’s trails, photo’s relations from trips and expeditions. Assistance in contacting with local organizations, schools, government. Actually we think about separate portal for Education Centre and e-learning platform.

During a regular trainings volunteers learn the techniques of abseiling, climbing, rafting, orienteering, survival and much more. Because they take part in the activities, they have opportunity to break their own physical and mental barriers, build up character and personality, learn to cope with hard situations and conditions. They gain new experiences in work with youth, contact with other organizations. They have a chance to hear about Art of Fortifications, a rich history of region, meet our specific culture and mentality. During fortress’ renovation, volunteer gain practical skills of crafts and working what gives him an abilities to have been good worker in future.
The Akademia Przygody consist of volunteers who strongly believe in our mission of unconventional youth education. We hope that foreign volunteers bring to us new view, ideas, methods. During work with youth, they will have opportunity to break local nationalism, stereotypes and barriers in international communication. We are open for learning from other countries, organizations, exchange an experience and co-operate.

You, volunteer, will you help us with these daily issues, maybe by finding out some idea, by laying some stone into the wall, by organise some memorable event? You can leave part of you here, hence you’ll be always welcome!

C. Volunteer profiles and recruitment process

Each group of volunteers should send motivation letter written directly for our activities. After receiving we will talk about expectations and needs. We need to be sure, that any volunteer understand the difference between work in office and work on fortress. After that we should get a group of volunteers who wants to participate in our project.

It’s not a problem to start a voluntary project, sometimes the real difficulty is to get connection with unknown people. To help you with that, we described our profile, interestnings, expectations. Be sure that our daily work is hard, sometimes toil. We are specific, thus if you choose this project, your thoughts should sounds like „Yes! That’s the group I need!”. Our activities are specific, you need a features as:
– Strong motivation, enthusiasm, positive attitude, energy, creativity.
– Want to learn polish language to communicate with us (however most of us know „EU-English”). Mime skills are also welcome!
– Wish to work with children and youth.
– Flexibility and cooperation skills
– Interests according to our activities (or wish to do it)
– Strong sense of humour!

Our association is open for cooperation with the other organization, especially connected with activities we are involved in.

D. Number of volunteers hosted

It depends of duration of project – for whole year’s projects organisation able to host about 6 people, for short term project even 40-60 volunteers.

E. Special needs

Instructors of the Akademia Przygody have special qualifications and experiences in work with children and youth with social, economical obstacles. They are able to help in case of problems to volunteers. Also, some parts of our program and activities is kind of sociotherapy-like.

F. Risk prevention, protectiona and safety

A safe living and working environment as well as good psychical condition are guarantee by our instructors, who has a long experience with working on fortifications, building places, organizing the camps with more than hundred people at the same time, taking care of children and youths participating in our activities. All of these experiences pull together for our Safety Policy. The same requirements, rules, methods that we use to youths is applied for all of volunteers.

That’s all connected with preventing risk and crises. Transparent, precise rules, planning together with friendly relations and looking for solutions results that is easier to solve a problems. We have in mind that each volunteer have different expectations and needs. That’s the reason of careful recruitment process.

Motivation and experience

Not more than few years ago, we were afraid of every initiative concerning with EU donations because of its different law and accountant policies. However, we made a project, „Fortress for youth”, which was successfully finished. It opens a new way to develop and make real our innovative idea of Education Centre for Conservation and History. What was more, we saw that the impact of our work could drift farther than just to region, even out of borders. Mentioned project, involving young Czech, Jakub Petras, results that after returning home, he still live by rules, ideas, values that he found here. We would like to continue this part of activity with new volunteers and new things to done.

Description of the organisation

Akademia Przygody (The Academy of Adventure) is a non-profit, non-governmental organization that combines the education of young people with the idea of protecting cultural heritage. By doing the conservatory work in a bestowed part of the Fortress in Kłodzko, young people can learn how to be more independent and responsible. In the ordinary course of the Education and Renovation Centre members of the Academy took part in the only one in Poland reconstruction of the XVIII centuries drawbridge. They also help with the renovation of the Crane Prominent Bastion. The unconventional education method, based on Baden Powell scouts movement, attracts young people to positive values and alternative way of spending their free time. The 1st Pontoon Team is run by positive Youth Leaders, selected and trained people, who are not much older than their wards (often from pathological circles) and can act upon their behaviour. The education takes place mostly during such outdoor activities as survival, climbing, archery or rafting on wooden pontoons (originally used in the 18th century). Each of these disciplines shapes certain personality traits of a young man. During these different activities, often in difficult conditions, the instructors through the hardening of body and mind, build the sense of brotherhood and manliness; at the same time help them to gain the natural energy for achieving the social aims.
